AJ would say he has been a writer & poet all his life. He spends his days with pen and paper attempting to discover his nothings to create everything from. “A poem should not say but be.” Is a quote he carries with him as a motto. One of his favorite quotes he has penned is, “if a picture is worth a thousand words each poem should be worth a thousand pictures.” The description of writing and painting has to be the same process is the goal he offers to students in his create it writing classes. Creating a formidable follow through with every day is his answer to anyone pouting writers block or being stuck in pause while writing. His ninth book published is “Steel Black” by Not Just Alphabets with the name AJ Houston as author. It is a privilege and a goal to publish enough books to be considered the author of his personal library, which would mean he has to publish at least 5 books a year. May we all be better stewards of the gifts we’ve been blessed with and may writing free your mind to dream bigger as you unlimit yourself.

Karen's life has been an extraordinary one. In High School, at a time when no woman's varsity team was given funding, she was one of the first to play nationally on a men's varsity tennis team, a radical move which helped to establish Title IX. At Vassar College she developed a large record collection, and became known for winning a bet where she ate ten hot fudge sundays in exchange for another student's rare jazz collection. After college, she was one of only a few women nationally to be writing about jazz and salsa in the major metropolitan market of New York City, publishing in Latin NY magazine and the Soho Weekly News. During this period, she met Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock, whose enthusiasm for the new field of electronic music inspired her to become interested in the art of recording. After calling almost every studio in New York for an apprenticeship and being repeatedly turned down, she finally found a studio who would train her. In addition to a woman working on the West Coast, Karen became one of America's first women recording engineers and record producers, later going on to work for Chappell Music/Polygram and earning two gold records.
A chance meeting with a combat photojournalist from Mexico at a NYC party led her to leave behind what was the endless sexism of the music business for the camaraderie of overseas journalism, and she became a combat photojournalist--only one of five women in the world. During that time, she was the first to report on the translocation of the endangered rhino in Zimbabwe for WCS, and in 1989 she was the first Western print journalist to go into the jungles of Myanmar and interview General Khun Sa, the King of the Opium Trade, a piece which ran in People magazine in June 1990.
After a series of injuries, later in life she designed educational video games, one which taught physics to kids and the other which was the first cognitive rehab game for patients with traumatic brain injury. She is now focusing on a literary career which will stand as her final legacy.
Karen Petersen's poems, short stories, and flash have appeared in a variety of national and international literary magazines and anthologies. Her poems have been translated into Persian and Spanish. She has read at the KGB Bar in NYC, Teatro Paraguas, the Santa Fe Public Library, and at the Yeats Festival in Santa Fe. She was also responsible for "The Badlands are Everywhere" evening honoring Malpais Review and editor Gary Brower, at Teatro Paraguas in 2017, and for co-organizing and participating in the "All-Star Poetry Reading" at the Center for Progress and Justice in Santa Fe in 2018. In 2019 she was one of the judges and participants in the Santa Fe Telepoem Booth, a national poetry/art installation project. In 2020 she was asked to be one of the state judges in the National Poetry Out Loud competition created by the NEA and Poetry Foundation.
As a photojournalist and foreign correspondent, Karen had assignments for The New York Times, Newsweek, Harper's, The Nation, People, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Forward, German GEO, Wildlife Conservation, The Universal Press Syndicate, Hortus, The London Daily Telegraph, The Times of London, Rolling Stone, U.S. News & World Report, Travel & Leisure, Scholastic, Unicef, UNDP, USIA and the World Bank.

Jennifer K. Yancey, a.k.a. The Poet RoseGold, hails from “the real Gotham City” – a Bronx, New York native who discovered Poetry at 15 and began using it as a more creative way of communicating with the world. Coupled with her 20-year career as an Army photojournalist, Poet RoseGold knew how to capture the human condition in real time through her lens and record its consciousness with her pen. She jokingly refers to her work as “Incendiary Redbone Poetry,” highlighting the injustices tarnishing the American landscape; spirituality; intimacy; self-love/Black love; mental health; and (past) life in the military. Poet RoseGold’s voice has crossed time zones virtually and in-person, through podcasts and numerous community engagements, including an appearance on the “red-dot stage” at TEDx Colorado Springs, in 2019. Poet RoseGold is also a member of TESORO – a newly-formed organization whose purpose is to hold safe space internationally for women “word-warriors” to “do their work.” Poet RoseGold’s work has been featured in several anthologies: Between a Laugh and a Tear (1991); Love Letters to Gaia (2021); The Cuddy Family Foundation For Veterans Poetry Journal Volume One and The Cuddy Family Foundation For Veterans Poetry Journal Volume Two (2021); Poet Speak Magazine, issue #40 (2021); Rising Voices: Poems Toward A Social Justice Revolution (2022); These Fought in Any Case: A Collection of Poems and Short Stories by Veterans (2022); and I Can’t Breathe, vol. 2 (2022). Her debut Poetry book, Poetry Is A Love Language (But First, Lemme Tell You Something … ) is slated for a late 2023 release.

Bio for Shelly "Badassia" Barnett:
Poetry became a lifelong passion when she was 7 years old. Her work appeared in school publications and local arts magazines in Portland, OR, as well as in pockets of lovers, family and friends.
Choosing an unknown life in New Mexico 6 years ago, Shelly discovered Open Mic Poetry in Albuquerque in early 2019. After a year of attending 4 to 5 monthly events, she spoke her truths even when her voice shook. Her first book, Upward Spiral, a powerful anthology by 4 women from Silver City, was released last November and its whirling energy for the future continues.
Her work boldly speaks to the present, fighting injustices and instigating good trouble.
Shelly is the co-founder of the Silver City Poetic Outlaws and hosts 3 Open Mic events monthly, all diverse in presentation, yet all inclusive. She also teaches youth to embrace and create poetic work that amazes themselves.
As the "Poet Lariat" of Silver City, she rounds up old and new voices that need to be heard.
